When the topic of slavery is brought up in conversations within British media or schools, there are three things you often hear. The first is that “Africans sold their own people”, as if that’s an excuse or justification for the racist barbarity and genocidal practices of Europeans.

The second is that William Wilberforce in Britain (or Abraham Lincoln in the USA) decided to set Africans free once the nation grew a conscience, with the enslaved Africans themselves merely waiting for a mighty white saviour.

The third is that Britain was the first country to abolish slavery, something British Prime Ministers and politicians love to declare. Each of these myths, that are so often perpetuated in British discourse surrounding slavery, are complete nonsense.
